TO: Prince William, Manassas, and Manassas Park Community Leaders
In 2009 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will celebrate its Centennial Anniversary. We are planning two major events during Black History Month to commemorate the occasion: a Centennial Awards Banquet on February 7, 2009 at 7:30pm at Quantico Marine Base Officer’s Club honoring local civil rights heroes and a NAACP Solutions Summit, (no cost to the public), for the Prince William, Manassas, and Manassas Park Communities on February 28, 2009 at the Little Union Baptist Church, Dumfries, Virginia.
Over the last one hundred years the NAACP has achieved tremendous victories in the struggle for civil rights. We are pleased with these victories but we realize there is still work to do. The NAACP Solutions Summit will address the challenges facing the African American Community in the 21st century and seek ways to resolve them. Challenges like increasing high school drop out and teen pregnancy rates; increasing HIV/AIDS infection; debt and home foreclosure; and rising drug abuse and incarceration rates. We need your help in addressing these issues. To assist us in preparing for the summit, your input and assistance in interpreting the data are essential.
We invite you (or a representative) to attend the next Prince William NAACP meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2008; First AME Church; 10313 S. Grant Ave. Manassas, VA; at 7:30 PM. The theme of the meeting is “A Community in Crisis”. We will have a slide presentation outlining issues. Afterwards there will be an opportunity for an exchange of input and ideas.
We are excited about this effort and look forward to your participation. Please confirm your attendance at the October 21st meeting by emailing us at info@pwnaacp.org. We thank you in advance for your willingness to participate.
